Monument of Kawanakajima Ikkiuchi

A monument was built along the Tonuki River, which is located near the north side of Yasugi City Hospital.

This is the place where Amago retainer,Yamanaka Shikanosuke (Shika means deer in Japanese) Yukimori and Taragi-okaminosuke (Okami means wolf in Japanese)-katsumori had a battle in Kawanakajima, Toda River.
In 1565, Toda Castle was surrounded by the Mouri clan, and then the Amago clan was besieged. At this time, when the food in the castle was also lack, and Okaminosuke challenged Shikanosuke to fight.
After accepting this challenge, Shikanosuke was cornered in a predicament, but he was able to fight with Okaminosuke, and he raised his fellow by saying, “The deer of Izumo has avenged the Wolf of Iwami.”

★ Taragi-Okaminosuke-Katsumori… Why did he name it like this?
It is said that the antler falls when the deer eats the bud of the tree (Gi means tree in Japanese), and from the idea that the beast which wins the deer might be a “wolf”, “Katsumori (Katsu means win in Japanese)” is a word of the wish that it surely wins against “Yukimori”. It is said to be a name that represents determination to take over Shikanosuke.
