Kawanakajima Battle Monument
Infomation
Toda, Hirose Town, Yasugi City
A monument stands on the banks of the Dnkan River near the north side of Yasugi City Hospital.
This is the place where Amago’s loyal retainers Yamanaka Shikanosukeyukimori andTaragi OkaminosukeKatsumori fought one-on-one on Kawanakajima in the Tondagawa River. Taragi Okaminosuke is the name of a brave samurai named Daizen Shinagawa , a vassal of Fujikane, the feudal lord of Masuda Nanao Castle in Iwami Province, who was a military commander of Motonari Mori.
In the 8th year of the Eiroku era (1565), Toda Castle was besieged by a horde of Mouri, and the Amago clan, who was once called the “eleven governors of the Chugoku region”, was besieged. During this period when the food supply in the castle was in short supply, Okaminosuke challenged Shikanosuke to a fight.
In response to this challenge, Shikanosuke brilliantly defeated Okaminosuke despite being cornered, and raised the morale of his allies, saying, “The deer of Izumo will defeat the wolf of Iwami.”
Taragi OkaminosukeKatsumori … Why did you choose this name?
It is said that when a deer eats a tree’s sprouts, its antlers fall off, and the idea that the beast that wins against a deer is a wolf is believed to be the beast that defeats a deer. Punning. The name is said to represent Daizen’s determination to kill Shikanosuke.
